But if you want to sniper fire from really long range, the French ships have the edge there. The insane fast rate of fire that the Des Moines has actually makes it easily the best fire starting cruiser at Tier 10. And that is the best tactic to always use when in a cruiser, as you can deal out damage while remaining unspotted. However, they are much better at shooting over islands because of their higher arcs. The American guns are not as long range, and have slower velocity, which means leading ships further at long range.
The French ships have great guns that have long range, and fast velocity that makes hitting at long range easier. Doing that would insure that you make the choice that is right for you, and don't end up grinding a cruiser line where you really don't care for the high tier ships. Simply do that, and see which ships you prefer.
What I would recommend that you do is sign up to participate in the Public Beta program, and then play the Public Beta for the next patch: 0.6.9 In the public Beta, you can easily test drive any of the ships in any of the lines., and play them in a game with others. So which line is best for you, entirely depends on your own preferences and play style. And while AA on the French ships is quite good, it is God like on the Baltimore, and especially so with the Des Moines, which has unrivaled firepower and range for its AA, The Des Moines destroys planes like no other ship can do. It allows you to better protect yourself if you like to play more forwards. If you are working with others in a Division or within your team, it can also be extra effective. Radar is a very powerful tool for hunting DD's. The American cruiser line changes dramatically when you get to the 2nd hull ( B Hull ) of the Tier 8 New Orleans, and the ships all then get radar.
